Robert Balls
Born in 1893 in Irstead he joined the Coldstream Guards before the war. All three battalions of Coldstream Guards left England for the front immediately on the outbreak of war in 1914. He was killed in action on 23rd October 1914 and is remembered at the Menin Gate, Ypres.
